CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team will play their fourth straight road match when they travel to Houston to take on New Mexico State on Sunday, March 2.
The Islanders were scheduled to face Texas-Pan American on Wednesday but as the rain rolled in the match was postponed. Prior to that, A&M - Corpus Christi earned a sweeping 4-0 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette on the road. Highlighting the team is Celia Rodriguez who is 6-1 in singles play and 4-1 in No. 3 doubles play with fellow sophomore Maider Martin.
Judit Vives has also been superb in her first year as an Islander. The freshman kept her perfect streak alive in singles play at Louisiana-Lafayette with a 6-0, 6-1 straight-set victory over Eleanor Bradshaw to improve to 5-0 in No. 6 singles. The Barcelona, Spain native is also undefeated in doubles play with senior Sandra Burges in the No. 2 spot. The pair topped ULL's Melissa Burckhartt and Juliette Clement, 8-6 to improve to 4-0 on the year.
New Mexico State is on a three-match losing streak and come into the match with a 4-7 record after securing wins against UC Riverside, Lamar, Northern Arizona and Southern Miss. The Aggies have dropped losses to Arizona, San Francisco, UNLV, Pacific, Abilene Christian, Stephen F. Austin and Rice.
The Islanders will return home to the Coastal Bend on Monday, March 10, to host Abilene Christian in their first Southland Conference match of the season.
