CORPUS CHRISTI – Sophomore Celia Rodriguez has been named the Southland Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced today. She led the women's team to one of their biggest wins ever with a clinching victory in No. 4 singles to defeat nationally ranked SMU on the road. The honor marks her first career weekly honor and the first for the Islanders this season.
"We are so proud of Celia," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "I'm so proud of the way she fought and the courage she showed to clinch the SMU match. That was an amazing effort from Celia. I'm the most proud of how she is working and what a great teammate she is. She has the best attitude in the world and that's the root of her success. Celia does all the little things, like cheering loud, putting the team first, embracing the disciplined athletic lifestyle, believing our tactics, working on all the things we ask her to work on and all the things you appreciate as a coach."
Rodriguez came up big for the Islanders this week to improve to 5-1 in singles play, including a perfect 5-0 mark in the No. 4 spot. The native of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain put together a huge performance to clinch the match over No. 75-ranked SMU. With the match on the line and her teammates cheering her on, Rodriguez edged Macie Elliott in a three-set victory in the No. 4 position. After falling 7-6 (2) in a close tiebreaker in the first, Rodriguez answered back with a 6-3 victory in the second set. In the third, Elliott pushed ahead 5-4, before Rodriguez rallied back to win 7-5 and clinch the match for the Islanders.
Prior to the SMU match, Rodriguez fought through the cold and windy weather to win in three sets against UTPA's Wanda Beguelin in No. 4 singles. Rodriguez and teammate Maider Martin have won three straight in doubles play to move to 3-1 in the No. 3 spot.
Rodriguez and the rest of the Islanders women's team along with the men's team are currently taking on Louisiana-Lafayette on the road in Lafayette, La.
