ARLINGTON, Texas –The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team came up short today, falling 4-1 to UT Arlington at the UTA Tennis Center. The Islanders clinched the doubles point but dropped four singles matches to move to 4-2 on the year.
"The girls fought very hard today," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "We played great in the doubles, but give credit to UT Arlington, they were very tough on their home court today. Our girls fought extremely hard yesterday and today, and I am equally proud of them for the way they controlled the things they can control.
"Like I said all along this season is a journey and is a journey to get better each week, and I like the road that we are on and the way we are learning. The one thing I love about this women's team is that character and effort are never a variable they are always a given. There are just some tactical things that we have to improve and we will."
The Islanders came out strong to secure the doubles point with victories on courts two and three. The duo of Sandra Burges and Judit Vives earned an 8-4 victory over the Mavericks' (4-2) pair of Ekaterina Tugarinova and Elizabeth Thoms. UT Arlington evened the matches at 1-1 after Astrid Gehre and Angeles de los Rios earned an 8-4 win over the Islanders' senior-freshman team of Stefania Nicolae and Kerry Galhos. A&M - Corpus Christi garnered the doubles point on court three. Maider Martin and Celia Rodriguez teamed up to top Jessica Birowski and Giada D'ortona 8-6 to clinch the point.
The Mavericks answered back with four straight singles wins to secure the match. Nicolae dropped a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Thoms in the No. 1 spot before Martin fell short 6-1, 6-2 to D'ortona in the No. 2 spot. UT Arlington padded its lead to 3-1 after Birowski handed Galhos her first loss of her career in the No. 5 slot, 6-3, 6-1. The Mavericks finished the match with a straight-set victory in the No. 3 position. De los Rios snapped Rodriguez's string of five consecutive victories with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. The sophomore remains undefeated in No. 4 singles.
In the No. 4 position, Burges won the first set 6-3 over Gehre, before dropping the second set 6-2. In the third, the set was even at 2-2 when the match was clinched. Vives won the first set 6-4 over Verena Scott in the No. 6 position and was ahead 5-4 in the second when the Mavericks earned their fourth point of the match. Vives holds a 4-0 record in singles play.
The Islanders will return to action along with the men's team at Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday, Feb. 18. The men's team will next be in action on Sunday, Feb. 16, in Dallas against conference opponent Oral Roberts.
