FORTH WORTH, Texas – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team sent three players to compete in the women's USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships on the campus of TCU. Sophomore Maider Martin advanced to the round of 64 in singles play today on the opening day of competition at the largest Division I tennis tournament in the state of Texas.
Martin secured her opening match in the round of 128 with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Ansley Boarman of Abilene Christian to advance to the round of 64. In the second round of play, Martin fell 6-0, 6-1 to No. 6 seed Jordaan Sanford of Baylor to conclude play at regionals.
"I thought we competed very hard today against some very quality opponents," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "This is one of the strongest tournaments in the country. The most important thing to me about the fall is that we're learning because it's the spring that we're judged on. I feel like these girls are getting better everyday in both the physical and mental parts of the game and I'm extremely excited abut this upcoming spring."
Martin and Stefania Nicolae teamed up in doubles play to open the day and dropped an 8-1 loss to Rice's top duo of Dominique Harmath and Alison Ho in the round of 64.
In singles play, Nicolae fell in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 to Jacobea Junger of UTSA in the opening round. Fellow senior Sandra Burges also dropped her opening round in straight sets to Texas State's Shannon Beckett. Burges was leading 5-2 in the first set, before falling 7-6. In the second set, Beckett won 6-1.
The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis team will travel to Waco, Texas, to compete in the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships on Saturday, Oct. 19. The event will continue through Tuesday, Oct. 22 on the campus of Baylor University. Set to compete for the men's team is freshman Kevin Bettendroffer and sophomores Ricardo Mayagoitia and Javier Pujol. Bettendroffer captured the men's singles title of the Marco & Co. Catering Islanders Open with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory over Mayagoitia, while Pujol won the consolation title of the men's singles final. The men's singles and doubles draws of the Texas Region will be posted on Friday.
There are 12 regions nationally in the ITA and the winner and the runner-ups of this tournament will represent their region at the National Indoors held in New York at the U.S. Open.
