Islanders Men's and Women's Tennis Teams Knock Off Prairie View

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs each earned victories over Prairie View A&M on Thursday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The women notched a 7-0 win over the Panthers, while the 58th-ranked men were triumphant by a 5-2 score in front of a crowd of 117.

"I just can't speak highly enough of the Corpus Christi tennis community, to have over 100 people come out to a Thursday afternoon match at 2:00," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "I will argue with anybody that this is the best tennis community in the United States."

The women improved to 11-2 on the season, their best start in program history. The team played its final non-conference affair, as it will close with five consecutive Southland matches in the last month of the season.

"I was really proud that we took care of business today," Moore said. "It takes a lot of focus to win every match against a good team and I have a lot of respect for Prairie View. The girls are really on a mission with a clear-cut goal and every day is an opportunity to improve one or two percent and get closer to that goal.

"I thought Maider Martin played a very focused match and I thought she really made a commitment to play the right patterns today. She will be so difficult to beat if she plays those patters each match. Celia [Rodriguez] has become just so reliable for us, and we know each match that she is going to work so hard on each point. She has been incredibly mature and reliable, especially for a freshman."

On the men's side, the Islanders upped their record to 9-7, as A&M – Corpus Christi faced an unranked opponent for just the fourth time this season. The men got out to a 5-0 lead before losing their final two matches in the super tiebreak.

"I feel like Gergo [Weidinger] has matured tremendously since last year," Moore said. "He has really learned how to win and play each present point with intensity. I could go on forever about how proud I am of him.

"Our young guys are learning and getting better every week. We have a lot of improvement to make and hard work to do, but I felt today was a step in the right direction that moves us closer to our goal.

Each team was without its top player, with Peter Nagy sitting out for the men and Doris Kuselj resting for the women's squad.

On the women's side, Stefania Nicolae/LeeAnn Mascall earned a quick 8-0 victory at No. 3, then Chelsea Horan/Sandra Burges added an 8-1 triumph at the No. 1 spot to take the doubles point for the home squad. At No. 2, Mia Matuszak/Maider Martin fell 8-5 to finish off doubles play.

The Islanders made quick work of the Panthers in singles, with Horan winning at No. 4 in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) to put the home squad up 2-0. Celia Rodriguez added a 6-0, 6-1 win of her own at No. 5 to make it 3-0, and then Burges added another straight-set win at No. 2 (6-0, 6-1) to clinch the match for the Islanders. Nicolae posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4, and Martin fought to a 6-3, 6-1 win in the No. 1 slot to push it to a 6-0 lead. At No. 6, Mascall rallied from behind for a 7-5 win in the first, then finished off the match with a 6-3 win in the second set.

The men earned the doubles point with a quick 8-1 win at No. 3 from the duo of Matt Westmoreland/Ricardo Mayagoitia that was followed by an 8-5 triumph at No. 2 by Odon Barta/Guillaume Rauseo, as the duo rallied pulled away late in what was once a 4-4 match. At No. 1, Gergo Weidinger/Andrew Maingot fell behind 7-4, then staved off elimination twice in a row, but were broken in the final game to fall in an 8-6 final.

The Islanders got quick straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 5, as Westmoreland (6-1, 6-2) and Rauseo (6-1, 6-3) made it 3-0 in favor of the home squad. A&M – Corpus Christi then clinched the match when Mayagoitia rallied in the second set for a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3. Weidinger added a come-from-behind win of his own at No. 1, coming from down 5-3 in the second to post a 6-1, 7-5 win to make it 5-0.

At No. 6, Daniel Erbacher fell in the first set, 6-3, but bounced back to tie it with a 7-6 win in the second set. With the match already clinched for the Islanders, he went to a super tiebreak, but came up short in a 10-6 final. No. 4 came out in a similar manner, with Pietro Jordao taking the first set 6-4 before losing in the second 6-3. The third set went to PVAMU in a 10-6 super tiebreak.

Both teams will now have a short break before they face conference matchups, with the men returning to action with a neutral-site match against New Orleans on March 27. The women do not play again until they face Southeastern Louisiana on March 29 in Hammond, La.
