CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Women's Tennis team earned its fourth straight victory on Thursday afternoon to stay undefeated, taking a 6-1 final over Texas – Pan American at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The match marked the 19th straight match that the Islanders have had over 100 fans in attendance, every event since the opening of the facility.
The Islanders (4-0) continued its high level of play against the Broncs (0-5) despite having No. 1 singles player Doris Kuselj and No. 5 singles Chelsea Horan limited to only doubles play due to injury.
"This was a tough competitive fight today," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "UTPA is much improved and competed very hard. I'm proud of way some of our girls stepped up today; they competed very hard when given the opportunity."
The Islanders played tough from the outset, sweeping the doubles matches over the Broncs. Kuselj and Stefania Nicolae put up the first point, earning an 8-2 final at the No. 1 position. No. 3 doubles finished next as Maider Martin and Mia Matuszak earned an identical 8-2 win to clinch the doubles point. Sandra Burges and Horan completed the sweep with an 8-6 tally at No. 2 doubles and send it to the second half of the match.
"I thought that all of these girls have been working super hard and I liked the fact that when we needed them they were ready to step in and compete," said Moore. "Overall, I really like the way this team is competing. We need to work even harder to rehab some injuries and keep getting five percent better every week. "
In singles it was another strong start from the home team, with Martin playing No. 1 and earning a quick 6-0, 6-3 final to make it a 2-0 score. No. 2 was next to finish as Burges dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 match to make it 3-0. Celia Rodriguez Delgado clinched the match for her team with a 6-2, 6-4 score at No. 4 singles to put another notch in the win column.
UTPA got on the board after the match was already determined, earning a tough three-set win over Ashley Garza at No. 6 singles by a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 final to make it 4-1. The Islanders picked up two more matches after that point, with Nicolae winning 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 at No. 3, and Leanne Mascall finishing things off with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 score at No. 5 singles.
"I really like the character and morale on this team right now, the captains are leading very well," said Moore. "UTPA fought hard today, it was a tough battle. Pan American has improved their team, so give them credit. There were a lot of close matches today."
Next up for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi will be a Saturday match on the road at St. Mary's in San Antonio. After that the team will return home for a match on Monday, Feb 11 at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. That match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
