The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Women's Tennis team, fresh off an upset of No. 75 Houston in the season opener, will jump right into Southland Conference play on Saturday afternoon, facing Central Arkansas in a neutral site match at 1 p.m. in Dallas. Due to the extreme distance between locations, the teams agreed to meet halfway in The Metroplex for the opener of each team's 2013 conference slate.
The Islanders (1-0) used grit and determination in the season opener to take a hard-fought 4-3 win over Houston on the road. Maider Martin, Sandra Burges and Stefanie Nicolae earned singles wins, while the teams of Burges and Chelsea Horan (8-0, No. 2) and Nicolae and Doris Kuselj (8-5, No. 1) earned wins in the doubles portion to clinch the match.
UCA is 1-4 on the season, with a win over Grambling and losses to Arkansas State, Arkansas-Little Rock, Louisiana Tech and Louisiana-Monroe. Although several more matches into the season, it will also be the first league contest of the year for the Bears.
A year ago, these two teams played in Dallas once again, with the Islanders taking a 5-2 decision on the way to the best season in school history. The team finished 16-5 and place third in the final Southland Conference standings. The team also won the first Southland Conference Tournament match in program history, taking a dramatic 4-3 win over Northwestern State to advance to the second round.
