The 2013 Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Women's Tennis season will get underway on Sunday afternoon, with the Islanders traveling to No. 75 Houston Cougars for a 3 p.m. match.
Coming off of the best season in program history, the women's team will look to improve on the highest Southland Conference finish since the start of the program, the first Southland Conference Tournament win ever and a 16-5 record, the best in school history.
Doris Kuselj, Leanne Mascall, Mia Matuszak are the three seniors that lead the eight returning players. Sandra Burges, Stefania Nicolae, Cassie Shaw, Ashley Garza and Chelsea Horan also return for the team, while Venesa Figueroa, Maider Martin and Celia Rodriguez Delgado represent the incoming freshman class.
The Cougars broke into the national rankings this past Tuesday, and improved their record to 3-0 after winning matches over McNeese State and Tyler Junior College on Friday at the Galleria Tennis and Athletic Club. Elena Kordolaimi leads the team at No. 1 singles while Celia Fraser follows up at No. 2.
Match time is set for 3 p.m. at the John E. Hoff Courts on the UH campus. It will be the first meeting between the teams since Houston earned a 6-1 win at home over the Islanders on Feb. 22, 2007.
