FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's tennis had its first ever doubles team recognized for All-Southland on Tuesday when Sandra Burges and Chelsea Horan were named Second Team All-Southland at No. 2 doubles, it was announced by the Southland Conference today.
The duo completed conference play undefeated, going 7-0 at No. 2 doubles, and 2-0 at the No. 3 spot, to earn the honor. For the season, Burges and Horan finished 13-2 overall, with the only losses coming against two nationally ranked teams in the Rice Owls and Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks.
"I'm so proud of those two girls, how hard they worked and the way they improved this year," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "I'm not sure if I've ever seen two players improve so much over course of year."
Against the tough competition of the Southland Conference, the duo came with intensity every match, helping the team to its best finish in school history.
"What I'm most proud of though was the spirit and character they played with," said Moore. "They were such fighters and they really encouraged each other so much.
No. 2 doubles was such a spirited court for our team this year; those two girls are just such winners and they brought a contagious positive energy that really uplifted our team."
The team will continue their remarkable run this Thursday, when they face the Northwestern State Lady Demons in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament.
The teams will meet at the Schlief Tennis Complex on the campus of regular season champion Stephen F. Austin. In the regular season, the Islanders lost a hard-fought 4-3 contest on the road against the Lady Demons, and will be looking to avenge the first Southland Conference loss of the year.
