Women’s Tennis Falls in Heartbreaker on the Road
NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought, 4-3 match against Northwestern State on Saturday afternoon in a Southland Conference road match. The two teams met in Natchitoches, La. on the campus of NWST.
The Islanders move to 6-2 on the year, and 1-1 in Southland matches, with the loss. The Lady Demons improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.
In doubles play, NWST picked up the point with a 2-1 score in the matches. At No. 3 doubles, the Islanders duo of Sandra Burges and Chelsea Horan picked up the lone victory for their team. At No. 1, Mirna Cicak and Doris Kuselj lost an 8-2 final, while Mia Matuszak and Stefania Nicolae fell 8-4 at the No. 2 position.
In singles, three of the matches went the distance, with the Lady Demons picking up two of the three-set matches in what turned out to be the difference maker.
At No. 5 singles, Horan won 6-3, 6-2 over Amy Williams, while Matuszak took a 6-0, 6-4 final at No. 6 singles for the second Islanders point. Nicolae had a hard-fought battle at No. 3 singles, falling in the first set before rallying for a 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4) for the win.
At No. 2 singles, Kuselj was unable to complete the victory, falling 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in another three-setter. No. 4 singles was the same, with Cicak also falling at No. 1 singles by a 6-0, 6-3 final. Burges battled hard before suffering a 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 loss to complete the scoring in the match.
Next up for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi will be in action next on March 9 against Southeastern Louisiana. Although the match is designated a home match for the Islanders, it will be played at a neutral site in Houston due to travel distance.
