CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis teams got some valuable experience on Friday evening in the first day of the Islanders Open at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The players only participated in doubles matches on Friday.
On the men's side, the big performers of the day were returner Aurelien Tave and newcomer Pietro Jordao. The duo won their opening round match by an 8-5 final against a team from UTSA before moving to the semifinals of the winner's bracket with an 8-1 triumph over a duo from Abilene Christian in round two.
The team of Nathan Robinson and Fernando Llorens also picked up a victory in the first round with an 8-5 win over a Tyler Junior College duo. They came up just short in round two, falling 8-5 to a Laredo Community College team.
Matt Westmoreland and Andrew Maingot were the third pair to compete for the Islanders, also picking up a first-round victory with an 8-4 final over a team from Tyler. They lose in the second round by an 8-0 final against the No. 2 seed team from Laredo.
In the women's bracket, Stefania Nicolae and Mia Matuszak picked up an 8-6 win over a Tyler duo before suffering an 8-2 loss against a team from Lamar.
The team of Ashley Garza and Cassandra Shaw lost an 8-5 match in the first round to a team from Tyler, and Sandra Burges and LeAnne Mascall lost a tough, 8-6 match against a team from Laredo.
