CORPUS CHRISTI – Sophomore midfielder/forward Yvette Franco of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team has been named to the Southland 2014 Preseason All-Conference Second Team, the league announced today.
The Corpus Christi native, who led the Islanders with eight goals and 19 points a season ago, was the Islanders' lone representative on the all-conference teams.
"I'm really excited for Yvette making the preseason all-conference team," head coach Shanna Caldwell said. "She is very humble and I know she'd be the first to acknowledge her teammates who helped her have such a great season last year. Her decision making and ability to read game situations will continue to fuel her growth as a player. We're excited to see her reach new heights this season."
Stephen F. Austin and Southeastern Louisiana each placed six student-athletes on the two teams followed by Sam Houston State with three and Nicholls and Lamar with two each. Central Arkansas and Houston Baptist each has one representative.
Franco got off to a tremendous start in her freshman campaign, registering a point in each of the team's first five games. After setting up Alyssa Miller's goal in the season opener against Houston, she went on to score seven goals in the next four games, including both of the Islanders' goals in a 2-1 win over UTSA, the first victory in program history. She added a goal in conference play against Nicholls, then registered assists in back-to-back games, setting up Miller's game-winner against McNeese State for the first conference win in Islanders lore.
The Islanders will open preseason play on Thursday night, when they play host to Cisco Junior College at 5:30 p.m. in an exhibition at the Dugan Family Soccer & Track Stadium. Admission is free for all spectators.
