Women's Soccer Falls to HBU, 4-0

HOUSTON – Houston Baptist scored three first-half goals en route to a 4-0 victory over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team on Sunday at Dunham Field.

The game was originally scheduled to be played on Sorrels Field, the normal home of the HBU women's soccer team, but heavy rains in the morning made it unplayable on Sunday afternoon. Officials elected to move the game to HBU's Dunham Field, the turf home of the Huskies football team.

"We played a lot better than the scoreboard showed today," head coach Shanna Caldwell said. "We played great possession, but couldn't turn it into shots or goals. A couple big calls didn't go our way, but that's just the way it goes sometimes.

"We're really looking forward to getting back in front of our home fans next weekend to finish the regular season off right."

Rebekah Tovar got the scoring going in the third minute. Lindsay Matlock set up the play with a cross into the box, with Tovar's shot going past Audrey Baldwin into the upper right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Islanders shook the early tally off to keep the score that way for the next 30 minutes, but the Huskies pushed the lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 34th. Taylor Gibson took a long lead pass from Kristi O'Brien to get behind the defense, then put it into the lower right corner.

Then, just before the half, the Huskies were able to push it to a three-goal advantage. This time, it was Natalie Hager, who turned an Islanders turnover into a breakaway and found the back of the net to make it 3-0 in favor of the home squad. HBU tacked on its fourth goal in the 80th minute, with O'Brien finishing off a Morgan Dean pass to complete the scoring.

A&M-Corpus Christi will now return home to wrap up its debut season at the Dugan Family Soccer and Track Stadium next weekend. On Friday, Nov. 1, the Islanders face Stephen F. Austin at 3:30 p.m. before the home finale on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 1 against Northwestern State. The Islanders will honor their lone senior, Baldwin, prior to Sunday's contest.
