Cardinals Down Islanders Soccer, 3-0

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar scored two early second-half goals in a span of 3:45 to pull away from the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team, knocking off the Islanders 3-0 on Sunday. Audrey Baldwin made a career-high 16 saves for the Islanders in the loss.

"The effort today was much better," head coach Shanna Caldwell said. "Now the challenge is to be mentally sharper. The rigors of a tough preseason and non-conference season are a new challenge for most of the players on this team and we just have to buckle down and refocus. When our bodies are a little banged up we still have to be mentally sharp.

"Again," she added, "we had some bright moments on the field today and the players subbing in did well. But overall, we have to keep possession of the ball better and be more disciplined in the back listening to our keeper."

The Cardinals held the advantage in play for much of the first half, but were stymied on multiple occasions by Baldwin. Lamar finally broke through in the 33rd minute in a wild flurry of activity. Mari Olastuen's first shot was saved by Baldwin, but Kimmy Albeno headed the rebound off the crossbar. The ball came back off the bar to Albeno, though, and this time her header was on frame, resulting in her seventh goal of the season and a 1-0 Cardinals lead at 32:44.

The two teams stayed even into halftime with the score the same at the break. But Lamar cashed in with a pair of early second-half goals to pull away. The Cardinals drew a corner in the 48th, and Jennifer Moore sent a cross into the box, where Amber Thornhill put her head on the ball and sent it into the goal for a 2-0 Lamar lead at 48:26.

The Islanders responded with energy, getting shots from Aulona Velaj and Alyssa Miller in the ensuing minutes. But Lamar countered, and pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 53rd. Albeno got the ball to Kristin Bos in close, and Bos was able to convert her third goal of the season at the 52:11 mark for a three-goal LU edge. From there the Cardinals were able to maintain their lead until the final whistle.

A&M-Corpus Christi is back on the road next weekend, with a contest at Southland newcomer Abilene Christian on Friday. Game time is set for 4 p.m. in Abilene.
