Islanders Soccer Era Set to Open Friday at Dugan Stadium
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team will play its inaugural match on Friday, Aug. 23, when it hosts the University of Houston at 5 p.m. at the Dugan Family Soccer and Track Stadium. The grand opening ceremony for the facility will be held just prior to the match at 4:55 p.m.
University President Dr. Flavius Killebrew, Director of Athletics Scott Lazenby, Texas State Representative Todd Hunter and primary benefactor Dr. Jack Dugan will take part in the grand opening ceremony, as the university dedicates the newest piece in Islanders Athletics' outstanding group of facilities. The stadium is one of the finest in the area, providing a permanent home for both the soccer and track and field programs at the Island University.
Islanders Soccer is in its first year as an intercollegiate athletics program, the 15th sport at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The university announced the addition of the program in October 2011, and head coach Shanna Caldwell was hired in January 2012. The first class of Islanders soccer players began practice just over two weeks ago, on Tuesday, Aug. 6.
A&M-Corpus Christi played two preseason events, a scrimmage at Houston-Victoria that resulted in a 4-0 win and an exhibition with the University of Texas, with the Longhorns prevailing 6-1. Rachel Keeley scored the lone goal for the Islanders in Austin last Friday, while Alyssa Miller put two balls in the back of the net at UHV.
The Cougars defeated Southland Conference foe Northwestern State in their lone exhibition match of the 2013 preseason. Jasmine Martinez scored the game's only goal in the fourth minute, and Cami Koski's four saves carried U of H to a 1-0 victory. Houston's second exhibition, scheduled against Rice, was cancelled.
The first 300 fans will receive a commemorative tshirt while the first 500 fans will receive a fan to help keep cool. There will also be a post-match autograph session with autograph cards provided by Small Planet Delicatessen & Bakery.
