UT Surges Past Islanders Soccer in Exhibition, 6-1

AUSTIN, Texas – Rachel Keeley scored a goal and Audrey Baldwin made seven saves, but Texas scored four second-half tallies to knock off the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team, defeating the Islanders 6-1 in an exhibition match at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Sharis Lachappelle scored a pair of goals for the Longhorns in the victory.

"Overall, I'm very pleased with the effort," head coach Shanna Caldwell said. "We came out and battled for the first 45 minutes, and as our fitness level improves, we'll be able to play better later in games. I was a little disappointed that we came out too flat in the second half and weren't engaged. That's something we've addressed and hopefully it won't happen again.

"The players did the little things we asked for," she added, "staying disciplined and putting the effort in – so we have a lot to build on from tonight. We got to see a lot of kids push through 90 minutes and it was nice to see Baldwin get a full game in since she hadn't had one in over a year."

Texas held a significant edge in possession early on in the game, but the combination of the Islanders defense and Baldwin in the net kept the game scoreless in the first 30 minutes. Baldwin's finest save came in the 25th minute, when Marchelle Davis came in alone on the senior. Baldwin came all the way out near top of the 18 and dived to her right to make the save to keep it deadlocked 0-0.

The scoring picked up shortly thereafter. The Longhorns cracked the scoreboard first, with Chantal Campbell putting the home squad ahead 1-0 in the 32nd minute. Lindsey Meyer played a nice ball ahead to Campbell in the center of the field, and the sophomore lofted it just out of the reach of Baldwin, as the ball trickled off her outstretched fingertips and just over the line at the 31:11 mark.

The Islanders didn't let that lead last long, though, pressuring up front to result in a brilliant goal for Keeley. Yvette Franco pressured the Longhorn backs, and deflected a pass right to Keeley in the middle of the field. The junior transfer then blasted a shot into the left side of the net from 25 yards to knot the score at 1-1.

But UT was able to respond once more before halftime, with freshman Jasmine Hart converting on a 1-v-1 situation against Baldwin. Meyer delivered a brilliant cross from near midfield to the far side to send Hart in alone. The frosh took a touch and then delivered a ball just inside the near post past the diving Baldwin to send it to halftime with a 2-1 score. The Longhorns outshot the Islanders 13-2 in the opening half.

Texas came out quickly after the break, pushing the lead to 3-1 on Lachappelle's first goal of the game. Kelsey Shimmick made a nice touch on a ball in the air to send it to Lachappelle just outside the 18. The junior unleashed a strike that deflected off an Islanders defender and into the net in the 47th minute.

The Longhorns continued their pressure, and extended their lead off a set piece in the 53rd minute. Shimmick played a beautiful corner to the top of the six, and Meyer headed it home for a 4-1 advantage. Lachappelle added her second goal of the game in the 62nd, shaking loose from the defender and sending a brilliant left-footed strike just inside the far post for a 5-1 lead. Brenda Saucedo added a goal in the 81st minute to conclude the scoring.

The Islanders will return to the pitch for the inaugural regular-season match in program history, on Friday, Aug. 23, at the Dugan Family Soccer & Track Stadium against the University of Houston. That afternoon will also serve as the grand opening of the facility, with the dedication ceremony starting at 4:55 p.m. and the game to start immediately after at 5.
