Soccer Drops UHV 4-0 in Scrimmage

VICTORIA, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team posted a resounding, 4-0 victory over Houston-Victoria on Monday in a scrimmage between the two squads. Alyssa Miller scored two goals for the Islanders, while Rachel Keeley and Hannah Joseph each scored once in the victory.

The Islanders dominated possession for much of the game, outshooting the Jaguars 24-1 in the victory, while Audrey Baldwin, Tori Stephens and Naomi Morales each saw time at keeper for A&M-Corpus Christi.

"I thought we came out in the first 10 minutes pretty organized and executed what our game plan was," Head Coach Shanna Caldwell said. "We asked the girls to come out today, put the effort in, be accountable for what their roles are and communicate with one another. I'm proud of how the kids played today.

"The level of effort didn't drop off from the starters to the reserves. There are some things we need to work on but I think we are headed in the right direction."

A&M-Corpus Christi wasted no time in getting out in front, as Miller's first of the game put the Islanders up 1-0 in the fifth minute. The junior smashed home a rebound off a Yvette Franco shot as the visitors took the lead at the 4:34 mark.

The Islanders maintained their strong play throughout the remainder of the first half, putting 15 shots up (six on frame), but could not find the back of the net and remained ahead 1-0 after the opening 45 minutes.

After the break, the Islanders doubled the lead in the 59th minute, as Keeley finished off a nifty play by freshman Kennah Leal. The Rockport-Fulton product fought for possession in the left corner, freed herself with a nice cutback, then sent a ball to Keeley on the far side. The junior wasted no time, sending it into the right corner for a 2-0 Islanders advantage.

Just 1:36 later, the lead moved to 3-0, with Joseph finishing off a wild sequence. Becca Chance sent a ball on frame from deep on the left side, but it was deflected by Jennifer Sanchez to Keeley. Keeley's second attempt was thwarted by a defender, but Joseph came in hard on the far side, smashing it into the right side of the net for a three-goal Islanders advantage.

Miller added her second goal of the game in the 77th minute off a nifty through ball from Kallyn Redona. Redona gained possession in the middle of the field, pushed forward in space, then sent a ball past the defenders to a streaking Miller. The junior finished it off into the right side of the net for a 4-0 Islanders advantage at the 76:27 mark to finish off the scoring.

The Islanders will be back in action on Friday night, when they face Texas on the pitch in an exhibition match in Austin at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Longhorn Network.

It will be the final tune-up for A&M-Corpus Christi before the grand opening of the Dr. Jack Dugan Family Soccer and Track Stadium on Aug. 23. The Islanders will face Houston at 5 p.m. after the dedication ceremony, scheduled for 4:55.
