CORPUS CHRISTI – Former Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golfer Krista Fenniak has earned a spot in the qualifying round for the 2014 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship. Fenniak, who graduated from the Island University earlier this year, will try to earn a spot in the 64-person matchplay tournament beginning on Monday morning.
Fenniak, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, will represent Canada in the event. She is slated to tee off on the first tee at 7:40 a.m. ET, and will be in a group with China's Fumie Jo and the United States' Dree Fausnaugh. The 2014 Women's Am is being played at Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, N.Y.
The top 64 players from Monday and Tuesday's stroke play will move on to the first round of matchplay, slated to start on Wednesday morning. The round of 32 and round of 16 matches will be played on Thursday, with the quarterfinals (Friday), semifinals (Saturday) and championship match (Sunday) to follow.
Fenniak, who played three years for the Islanders, qualified for the tournament by shooting a 74 at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore. She tied for second at that qualification, which was held on July 15.
