Islanders Golf Stumbles in Opening Round of Rio Verde Invitational

RIO VERDE, Ariz. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf team shot an opening-round 322 at the Rio Verde Invitational to sit in 18th place through the first round. Vanessa Johnson led the Islanders with a 78 in the first 18 holes.

Northern Illinois' Sydney Brickey was the only player in the field to shoot par, delivering a 71 to sit in first place. Montana's Tara Green, Northern Arizona's Kaitlen Parsons and Akron's Frida Fougberg are in a three-way tie for second, one shot behind.

Montana leads the field as a team with their first round 298, as Green's 72 and Alexa Schendelman's 74 give the Grizzlies two players in the top five. Wichita State saw three players in the top 16 to sit in second place with a 299, while Eastern Michigan sits third with a 301.

In addition to Johnson's 78, Krista Fenniak and Lindsay Biehler each delivered an 80, while Ana Paredes carded an 84. Claudia Galindo was forced to withdraw due to injury.

The Islanders will be paired with Missouri State and Illinois State in the second round, which tees off at 8 a.m. MT on Saturday. The Islanders will be starting on holes 15-17. Live stats will be available for the event through
