CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf team shot a third-round 308 – its best round of the tournament – to finish in 11th place (319-316-308—943) at the 2014 Islanders Classic.
The Islanders saw three of their four players shoot 76 or better in the final 18 holes, with Vanessa Johnson and Krista Fenniak each posting 75. Lindsay Biehler added a 76, while Ana Paredes delivered an 82 in the third and final round.
Fenniak (77-77-75—229) finished 19th, while Biehler (78-76-76—230) was just a stroke back in 23rd. Johnson (81-83-75—239) bounced back from a tough opening day to finish in 44th, and Paredes (83-80-82—245) was 60th. Claudia Galindo shot an 87 in the first round before withdrawing due to injury.
Lamar defended its 2013 title, taking the 2014 crown with an 892 (302-295-295), outdistancing Houston Baptist's second-place 908 (292-310-306). Oral Roberts (314-304-297—915), Oklahoma City (301-305-311—917) and North Texas (308-307-306—921) rounded out the top five.
OCU's Elia Folch took the individual title, shooting a three-round 219 (70-73-76). She finished one stroke ahead of a trio of Southland golfers in second place – Lamar's Wenny Chang (75-73-72), Central Arkansas' Sarah Brown (74-74-72) and Sam Houston State's Alisa White (72-74-74).
The Islanders will return to the links on March 7-9, as they head to Arizona for the prestigious Rio Verde Invitational. It will mark their third straight trip to the tournament, which is hosted by Western Michigan University.
