Golf Heads to Huntsville for Harold Funston Invitational
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf team returns to action this week, as it heads to Huntsville, Texas, for the Harold Funston Invitational, hosted by Sam Houston State. The 54-hole event will feature 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday at Raven's Nest Golf Course.
The Islanders are hoping to emulate last season's results, as last year A&M-Corpus Christi finished second as a team with three of the top 11 rounds in school history, as the team went 298-296-295 for a three-round 889. Vanessa Johnson took medalist honors at that event, including a school-record 69 in the final round.
Other teams at the 2013 Funston Invitational include Incarnate Word, Lamar, New Orleans, Oral Roberts, Stephen F. Austin, Texas-Pan American, Tyler JC and Western Texas College. The Funston will be laid out to a par-71 and measures 6,067 yards. Play commences Monday morning with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
The Islanders are coming off a ninth-place finish at the ORU Shootout, highlighted by Johnson's second-place finish. Johnson will be joined in the lineup this week by seniors Lindsay Biehler and Krista Fenniak and freshmen Ana Paredes and Claudia Galindo.
Updates will be provided during the tournament as they become available on Twitter (@IslandersGolf) and final results will be posted on GoIslanders.com.
