Johnson Takes 2nd, Islanders Finish 9th at ORU Shootout

TULSA, Okla. – Junior Vanessa Johnson shot a final-round 73 to take second place at the ORU Shootout, presented by Bob Hurley Auto Family, as the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf team finished ninth at the event. The Islanders shot 311 in the final round of action to post a three-round 934.

It marks Johnson's third career top-two finish and her fifth career top-10, as she shot 75-74-73 for a three-round 222. In addition to taking medalist honors at the Harold Funston Invitational, she was the runner up at the 2013 Southland Golf Championship last season. The Carroll High School product finished seventh at the ORU Shootout a year ago.

"Vanessa really got back into form this week, which was incredibly important for our team. I'm really proud of the way she came back and had a strong round," head coach Carol Blackmar said. "Also, Lindsay had a really nice third round – she has struggled at this course in the past and she came out and conquered it today. She and Krista were able to bounce back after being up and down the first two rounds. We knew with two freshmen regularly in the lineup we would have some inconsistency this season, and unfortunately that was big today."

Johnson finished six strokes back of champion Sofie Kuarnstrom, who was four strokes better than any other player in the field in the final round. Kuarnstrom shot a 68 in the final round to wrap up the Shootout with a 216.

Lindsay Biehler matched Johnson in the final 18 holes, posting a 73 of her own on Tuesday. The senior posted a 231 for the Shootout to finish in a tie for 21st individually. Krista Fenniak shot a 78 in the third round to post a 240 for the event, while freshman Ana Paredes posted an 87 on Tuesday to finish with a three-round 241. Claudia Galindo shot 89 on Tuesday to post 262 for the three rounds.

The Islanders will get right back to action next week, when they head to Huntsville, Texas for the Funston Invitational, hosted by Sam Houston State. The first 36 holes of the event will be played on Monday, Oct. 7, with the final round slated for Tuesday, Oct. 8.
