LINCOLN, Neb. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf team sits in ninth place (321-323-644) through the first two rounds of the Chip-N-Club Invitational, hosted by the University of Nebraska. It marks the first tournament of the year for the Islanders.
Seniors Lindsay Biehler (77-77-154, 17th) and Krista Fenniak (79-79-158, 28th) led the way for the Islanders, while freshmen Claudia Galindo (81-78-159, 31st) and Ana Paredes (84-89-173, 70th) also scored. Vanessa Johnson (88-89-177, 73rd) had a tough first day of her junior season.
Biehler posted two birdies in the opening round, to go along with five bogeys and a double on the par-3 15th to finish with a 77. In the afternoon session, she duplicated those results exactly to post her second 77 of the day.
Fenniak showed some mettle in the first 18 holes, bouncing back from doubles on the fourth and the sixth to post three straight birdies on 9, 10 and 11. But a double on 13 to finish her opening round saw her with a 79 in her first 18 holes of the year. She opened the afternoon session with four pars, but a triple on the 18th thwarted her momentum. She rebounded with a pair of birdies on the front nine, but six bogeys from the second through the 11th left her with another 79.
Galindo shot 81 for the opening round before following that up with a strong 78 in the afternoon session. The freshman had a rocky start to the session, falling plus-6 through the first five holes, but from then on she shot even par, with four birdies offsetting two bogeys and a double. Paredes shot 84-89 in her first collegiate action, and Johnson finished the day 88-89 for the Islanders.
The teams will return to the course for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start for the final round tomorrow, with the Islanders teeing off on holes 8-10. Live stats will be available on BirdieFire.com and updates will be provided on Twitter throughout the day (@IslandersGolf).
