Top Performance #8: Vanessa Johnson at Southland Championship

CORPUS CHRISTI – Throughout the summer of 2013, will look back at the best moments and athletic performances from the 2012-13 school year.

Every Thursday, we will bring you one of the top 10 individual performances, with Tuesdays bringing the year's top 10 moments. Be sure to keep tabs on throughout the summer to celebrate all the great moments.

Sophomore Vanessa Johnson has had a strong career in her two short years at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Three top 20 finishes as a freshman. A title at the Harold Funston Invitational as a sophomore. But no accomplishment to this point in her time at the Island University tops what she did at the Southland Championship in 2013.

The Corpus Christi native came into the final event of the season scuffling a little bit, her best finish of the spring an 18th-place performance at the Islander Classic back in February. But with the biggest tournament of the season looming, she burst onto the course.

Johnson matched the school record with a 69 in the opening round to sit one shot off the lead through the opening 18 holes. Using her momentum, the Islanders set a team school record of their own in the round, carding a 292 to sit in first place through the opening day of the tournament.

Both Johnson and her teammates fell off a bit in round two, but she still posted an even-par 72 for the second round, remaining in second through 36 holes. In the round, she posted a quartet of birdies to sit two strokes back of leader Shelby Hardy of Sam Houston State. Her final 18 saw her card a 77, but that was enough for her to garner runner-up honors, the best Islanders finish at the event in school history.

Johnson was rewarded for her performance with Second Team All-Southland Conference honors following the season, narrowly missing the cut for First Team laurels. Her 76.64 stroke average was best on the team and fifth in the conference.
