Play Suspended in Second Round of UALR Women's Golf Classic
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Play was suspended due to darkness during the second round of the UALR Women's Golf Classic, played on Monday at Diamante Country Club. The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's golf team tied for seventh in the opening round with a 325 amid tough weather conditions in Arkansas.
Temperatures sat in the low 40s with wind gusting near 30 mph throughout the opening day of the event. Missouri State led all teams with a 312 in the first round, with Central Arkansas and North Texas tied for second at 319. Only 15 individuals broke 80 through the first 18 holes. The second round was stopped with approximately five holes remaining.
"It was a tough day for golf out there, and it was the kind of day where shooting par on any given hole was a win," head coach Carol Blackmar said. "I was really proud that our seniors showed good leadership and didn't let the conditions get to them. Tomorrow should bring a little better weather, and hopefully our scores will improve as well."
Senior Nikki Dunn sat in fifth place after round one, with her 78 leading the team, as she was one of three players at plus-6. Her classmate, Taylor Slagle, finished just behind with a 79, as she sat alongside seven others in a tie for eighth. Fenniak added an 81 to give the Islanders three players in the top 25. Sophomore Vanessa Johnson (87) and junior Lindsay Biehler (88) rounded out the Islanders scores for the opening round.
Through the first 13 holes of round two, Dunn and Slagle were both plus-4, Johnson plus-7 and Fenniak plus-9.
The Islanders finished the opening round just two strokes back of host Arkansas-Little Rock, which delivered a 323. Southland foe Sam Houston State and Middle Tennessee tied for fourth at 324, while A&M – Corpus Christi was joined by Oral Roberts in seventh.
MSU's Emma Clegg tied with North Texas' Georgina Mundy and SHSU's Nicole Budnik atop the round-one leaderboard with a 74. UCA's Julia Roth was the only other player to post a 77 or better, delivering a 76 over the first 18 holes.
