CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi golf team will hit the road this week to take part in the 2013 Rio Verde Invitational at the White Wing Golf Course in Rio Verde, Ariz. The course will play to a par 72 and a total distance of 6,215 yards, and is hosted by Western Michigan University.
The Rio Verde Invitational will be a 54-hole, three-round event over the course of three days. Each day will feature 18 holes, beginning on Friday, March 8, and completing on Sunday, March 10. Friday's action will start at 1 p.m. MT, while Saturday and Sunday rounds tee off at 8 a.m.
The 2013 Rio Verde Invitational Field consists of 17 teams. Maryland-Kansas City, Montana and Northern Illinois are all competing in the tournament for the first time in 2013. Other teams joining the Islanders will be host WMU, Akron, Arkansas-Little Rock, Ball State, Bradley, Eastern Michigan, Missouri State, Northern Arizona, Ohio, Toledo, Wichita State, Xavier and Yale.
A&M – Corpus Christi will feature the same five players it did for the season-opening Islanders Classic two weeks ago. Senior Nikki Dunn will play in the No. 1 slot, followed by sophomore Vanessa Johnson, senior Taylor Slagle and juniors Krista Fenniak and Lindsay Biehler. The Islanders finished sixth as a team at their home event, led by an 11th-place individual finish from Dunn.
This will be the third straight year that the Islanders have taken part in the Rio Verde Invitational, finishing fifth last season and 10th two years ago. Ryann White finished in a tie for fourth in the 2012 event, with Dunn finishing 14th.
