Islanders Golf Takes Sixth at Islanders Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's golf team finished in sixth place at the annual Islanders Classic, hosted by the Corpus Christi Country Club on Monday and Tuesday. The Islanders posted a 315 in the second and final round of the event to post a 640 (325-315) overall.

"With this being our home event, I was hoping we would put up a better team result," Head Coach Carol Blackmar said. "Still, there were some good things that we can hang our hats on, and I know that we can improve from here. I'm confident that we'll improve and be in the hunt for a conference title this year."

Lamar won the team title with a 616 (317-299), while Oral Roberts was three shots off the lead with a 619 (322-297). Missouri State (317-305—622), Sam Houston State (322-304—626) and North Texas (321-310—631) rounded out the top five. The tournament's afternoon round on Monday was cancelled due to high winds in the Corpus Christi area.

Danielle Lemek of Bradley took home the individual title with a two-round 145 (72-73), while Lamar's Julie Aime was the runner up after shooting a 70 in the second round to post a 147. North Texas' Chaslyn Christmer finished third with a 149 (73-76).

Nikki Dunn led the Islanders with a 155 (76-79) to finish in 11th, while Vanessa Johnson was 18th at 158 (83-75). Taylor Slagle was 32nd with a two-round 162 (83-79), while Krista Fenniak (84-82) and Lindsay Biehler (83-83) tied for 48th with a 166. The Islanders will return to the links when they head to the Rio Verde Invitational, hosted by Western Michigan University, at Rio Verde Country Club. The tournament will be three rounds of 18 holes per day, played from March 8-10 in Rio Verde, Ariz.
