CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's golf team will open the 2013 spring campaign with its lone home event of the year, as it plays host to the Islanders Classic on Monday, Feb. 25, and Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the Corpus Christi Country Club. The Islanders will be one of 14 teams participating in the event.
Participating teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday as part of the three-round event. The Classic will feature a shotgun start on both days starting at 8:30. The course will play to a par 72 and a total of 6,093 yards. Each team will have five players teeing off, with the top four scores of each round counting toward the team score.
In addition to the Islanders, several Southland Conference foes will take part in the classic, with Lamar, Central Arkansas, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin and Oral Roberts among the field. Other Lone Star State opponents include North Texas, Houston Baptist, Texas-Pan American, McLennan Community College and Texas A&M – Kingsville. Bradley, Missouri State and Oklahoma City University round out the field.
The Islanders will send a lineup of seniors Nikki Dunn and Taylor Slagle, juniors Krista Fenniak and Lindsay Biehler and sophomore Vanessa Johnson onto the course. Cristina Reynoso and Nicole Shea will also play in the Classic as individuals.
In last year's Classic, the Islanders finished third, just four strokes behind Lamar for second at the event. UTSA won the event by 40 strokes a year ago. The Islanders had three players finish in the top 20 individuals.
