LAKEWOOD RANCH, FLA. – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi golf team shot an opening-round 312 to sit in a tie for seventh place at the 35th Annual FIU Pat Bradley Invitational on Sunday at Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club. Krista Fenniak led the Islanders with a 76 to sit 16th through the first 18 holes, while Taylor Slagle is one shot back in 21st.
Host Florida International leads the way through the opening round after shooting a 296, while Cincinnati is just one shot back. Florida Gulf Coast and Boston College are tied for third at 303. UC's Olivia Dose delivered the low round of the day, shooting 69 for a two-shot lead on the field through the opening 18 holes.
Fenniak had a consistent round throughout, with just one hiccup on the 11th hole. The junior delivered 13 pars, three bogeys and a double bogey – on the par-4 11th. She added a birdie on the par-5 18th to post a 76 – her sixth round of 76 or better out of 13 rounds this fall.
Slagle started on the sixth hole and opened her day with two pars and two bogeys to sit plus-2 heading to the turn. She then shifted into high gear on the back nine, notching a birdie on the 10th, then seven pars and a birdie on 18 to return to even heading to the 1st tee. But a double on 1 and bogeys on 3, 4 and 5 left her with a 77 through the first day of competition.
Sophomore Vanessa Johnson delivered the team's best performance on the front nine, but a tough stretch on the back had her with a 79 on day one to sit in 35th. Johnson bogeyed her first hole – the 4th – but followed that with six straight pars to sit at plus-1 heading to the 11th. After a double on 11, she followed with bogeys on four of the next five holes to fall to plus-7, but responded by finishing her round with five straight pars to end the day.
Lindsay Biehler carded an opening round 80 to finish in the fourth slot for the Islanders. She posted two double bogeys – one on the 14th and one on the 1st – to go along with five bogeys and a birdie on the 18th to finish her opening round in 40th place. Senior Nikki Dunn struggled with an 89 in the first round of play.
