HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Corpus Christi native Vanessa Johnson collected medalist honors and the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi golf team finished second at the Harold Funston Invitational, hosted by Sam Houston State, on Tuesday afternoon. Johnson shot a 214 (69-72-73) to win the individual title by four shots, while teammate Krista Fenniak finished third.
"What a performance by Vanessa this week," head coach Carol Blackmar said. "In her young career, she has shown flashes of being a top-flight golfer in the Southland Conference, but this week was the culmination. If she continues on this path, she can go down as one of the top golfers in our program's history.
"As a team," she added, "we still have some things to work out, but it was a great performance as a whole. I'm so proud of Nikki [Dunn] coming through the way she did today. For us to break 300 all three rounds and not count a single score in the 80s is huge for us. This was a good week for Islanders Golf."
St. Edward's won the team title with an 884 (290-297-297), while the Islanders finished just five shots behind at 889 (298-296-295). Host SHSU finished third with a three-round 892 (297-295-300), while fellow Southland foe Lamar took fourth with an 898 (300-297-301).
Fenniak finished just one shot out of second place, tying for third with a 219 (73-72-74). Dunn had a tremendous final round, firing a 70 – the lowest round of her career – to surge to 13th place with a 225 (78-77-70). Taylor Slagle delivered a 78 in the third round to finish in 22nd with a 231 (78-75-78). Cristina Reynoso shot 244 (81-83-80) to tie for 35th in her first action of the season.
The Islanders return to action in two weeks, when they travel to the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational on Oct. 21-23. It will be the final event of the fall for the Islanders.
