Islanders Sit Fourth After Day 1 of ORU Shootout

TULSA, Okla. – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's golf team used a strong second round to move into fourth place at the Oral Roberts Shootout, presented by Bob Hurley Auto Family. The Islanders (314-309) had the second-best score of the afternoon session at the par-72 Meadowbrook Country Club.

"I was really proud of how we bounced back in the second round today," Carol Blackmar said. "We showed a lot of mental toughness after struggling in the first 18 holes. If we continue to improve in the final round tomorrow this will be a solid result for our team."

Corpus Christi native Vanessa Johnson leads the Islanders with a 151 (74-77) to sit in a tie for fifth place at the Shootout. The Carroll High School product is just five shots behind leader Julie Aime of Lamar (73-73-146) and four behind Sam Houston State's Shelby Hardy (72-75-147) – both of whom were all-Southland Conference selections a year ago.

Lamar (302-303-605) holds a commanding 11-shot lead on second-place ORU (306-310-616) heading into the final round. Sam Houston State (304-316-620) is three shots ahead of the Islanders, as the top four teams in the event all hail from the Southland Conference.

Krista Fenniak is second among the Islanders at the event, posting a 155 (76-79) to sit in a tie for 18th through the first two rounds. Nikki Dunn is in a tie for 30th with a 158 (81-77), while Taylor Slagle posted the best round of the afternoon session for the Islanders with a 76 and sits 32nd overall with a 159 (83-76). Lindsay Biehler posted a 167 (85-82) on the day.

In the opening round, Johnson shined, coming into the clubhouse in fourth place after firing a 74. It was the sophomore's second round of 74 or better on the season and the fifth such round of her career. Fenniak added a 76 to find herself eighth through the opening 18 holes. Dunn shot an 81, while Slagle delivered an 83 and Biehler posted an 85 to round out the scoring.

The Islanders will tee off at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, and will play alongside Southern Utah and UTEP for the final 18 holes. For all the latest on Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Golf, be sure to follow the team on Facebook (IslandersGolf) and Twitter (@IslandersGolf).
