CORPUS CHRISTI – The duo of senior Taylor Slagle and sophomore Vanessa Johnson of the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi golf team combined for a third-place finish today at the Women's Texas Four-Ball Championship, shooting a three-under 139 for the two-day event. The Championship took place on the Ram Rock Course at Horseshoe Bay Resort.
After a tough start in Tuesday's action, Slagle and Johnson rallied with a second-round 67 on day two. The twosome posted six birdies on the day, with the only blemish a double bogey on the 10th.
In the opening round, the duo teamed up for a one-over 72 to sit in fifth through the first day on Tuesday. They saw some potential birdie opportunities go for naught in the best-ball event, finding themselves nine shots back of the leaders through 18 holes.
Former Islander Ryann White won the event in 2011, along with her partner Marian Barker. The prior year, Slagle and teammate Sarah Hurt edged White and Barker in a playoff.
Slagle also competed in the Texas Women's Open at The Lakes at Castle Hill earlier this month. The Southlake native shot 79 in each round, finishing 48th overall (out of 96) and placing 13th among the 47 amateurs who took part in the event.
