LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi golf team posted a 15th-place finish at the UALR Women's Golf Classic after a third-round 310 on Tuesday at Diamante Country Club. Freshman Vanessa Johnson (Corpus Christi/Carroll) finished 22nd to lead the Islanders with a three-round 225 (78-73-74).
UTEP took the team title with an 897 (304-300-293), edging Tulsa (297-303-298—898) by a single stroke. Middle Tennessee State's Karisa Akin took medalist honors after shooting 215 (74-70-71) for the 54-hole event to lead her team to a third-place finish. The Islanders finished the two-day event with a 927 (312-305-310).
Junior Taylor Slagle shot a 77 in the final round, second on the team only to Johnson's 74, to finish with a 237 (81-79-77). Sophomore Nikki Dunn was second overall for the Islanders with her 232 (73-80-79), while Krista Fenniak (80-75-80—235) and Ryann White (83-78-85—246) rounded out the lineup for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.
Central Arkansas, the lone other Southland school in the event, finished 17th with a three-round 932 (304-318-310), as Julia Roth tied for 12th with a 223 (70-78-75) for the Bears.
The Islanders are back on the links next week, as they head to Houston for the HBU Husky Invitational on Monday, April 2, and Tuesday, April 3. That will serve as the final tune-up for A&M – Corpus Christi before the Southland Championship, set for April 16-18 at Vaaler Creek Golf Club in Blanco, Texas.
