Golf Sits Second Through Two Rounds of Islanders Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI – Through two rounds, the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women’s golf team sits in second place at the 2012 Islanders Classic, having posted a two-round 619 (304-315). UTSA holds a commanding lead with a 592 (296-296) heading into the third round, which will tee off at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Corpus Christi Country Club.

Nikki Dunn (77-75—152) led the way for the Islanders on the opening day, as the junior sits in a tie for 10th. A&M – Corpus Christi also got a strong outing from freshman Vanessa Johnson, as the Corpus Christi native is tied for 12th after notching a 153 (75-78) on day one. Senior Ryann White (Lubbock, Texas) sits in 23rd, having posted a 156 (75-81). Taylor Slagle (77-81—158) rounded out the Islanders’ scorers, while Lindsay Biehler (Austin, Texas) had a two-round 173.

UTSA’s Taylor Newlin (72-73) and North Dakota State’s Amy Anderson (75-70) are tied for the individual lead with a one-over 145 through two rounds. Summer Batiste (75-74—149) and Fabiola Arriaga (76-74—150) each are in the top five for UTSA, while the Roadrunners also had Paola Valerio (73-78) and Shannon Jungman (76-75) tied for sixth. Central Arkansas’ Julia Roth, who finished second at last year’s Classic, is tied for fourth with Arriaga at 150 (71-79).

Southland schools dominate the team scoreboard heading into the final round. UTSA has a 27-shot lead heading into the third round, with the Islanders in second. Lamar (304-317—621) is two shots back from A&M – Corpus Christi in third place, while future Southland member Houston Baptists has a 624 (313-311) for fourth place. Sam Houston State (318-309—627) and UCA (308-319—627) are tied for fifth at the event.

Several individuals posted strong scores in the opening round, but conditions worsened as the day progressed. A drizzle and light fog set in for the final 12 holes of action at the Country Club, as scores for round two increased in most cases. The exception to the rule was Anderson, who posted the low round of the day with a 70 in the afternoon session, which included a four-under 32 on the front nine.

The Islanders also had three players compete as individuals in the event. Sophomore Krista Fenniak came out firing with a 72 in the opening round, but posted an 86 in the afternoon session for a two-round 158. Cristina Reynoso is tied for 56th with a 166 (77-89), while Nicole Shea sits 75th (89-90—179).

Round three tees off at 8:30 a.m. at the Country Club, with a shotgun start scheduled. The Islanders will tee off on holes 1-3. For the latest on the Islanders Classic, be sure to follow the Islanders on Twitter @IslandersGolf.
