White Takes Second at Harold Funston Invite

HUNTSVILLE – Senior Ryann White (Lubbock/Coronado HS) posted her low round as a collegiate golfer, shooting a 69 to grab second place with a 142 (73-69) at the Harold Funston Invitational on Tuesday. The Islanders finished fourth as a team with a two-round 604 (300-304).

"Ryann was tremendous today and I'm so proud of the effort she put forth," Head Coach Carol Blackmar said. "If it hadn't been for an impressive performance by one of her competitors, she would have had her first title today. As a team, consistency was again our issue, but I know we have the talent and ability to be a strong contender in the Southland."

White's two-round 142 was one shot off individual medalist Sarah Schober, who finished with a one-under 141 (71-70) in helping Redlands CC (300-292—592) to a second-place finish. Host Sam Houston (294-296—590) won the women's title, while St. Edward's (308-291—599) finished third, five strokes ahead of the Islanders.

In addition to White's second-place finish, Nikki Dunn (Harrogate, England/Harrogate HS) and Taylor Slagle (Southlake/Southlake HS) both finished tied for 15th. Dunn slipped after her opening-round 73, shooting a 153 for the event, while Slagle remained consistent, delivering a 77 one day after a first-round 76.

Freshman Vanessa Johnson (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS) shot a strong second-round 78 to finish her first collegiate tournament with a 25th-place 158 (80-78). Sophomore Lindsay Biehler (Austin/McNeil HS) reversed those scores (78-80—158) to garner a top-25 finish as well.

The Islanders are off next week, and will return to action on Oct. 24, when they play at the University of Memphis Invitational at Ridgeway Country Club to wrap up their Fall 2011 season.
