Head Women's Basketball Coach Royce Chadwick announced the hiring of Darren Brunson on June 8, 2012, as an assistant coach for the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women’s basketball team.

“We are very excited to add Darren to our staff,” Chadwick said. “He brings a wealth of experience to our team. Not only is he a great recruiter, but a tremendous floor coach. He knows Texas recruiting and is one of the best evaluators I have ever been associated with. Darren is a welcome addition to our Islanders family and we are very fortunate to have him with us.”

Brunson comes to the Island University after spending two years as the associate head coach and team’s recruiting coordinator at Texas Southern University.

“I’m excited about being an Islander and I’m looking forward to taking this program to the next level,” Brunson said. “I’m eager about the opportunity to work with Coach Chadwick and his staff. With the staff that we have and the facilities that we have here on the Island we have an opportunity to bring in exceptional student-athletes to help compete for a Southland Conference Championship.”

Prior to joining the Tigers, he worked at the University of Texas-El Paso from 2002-10. It was there where Brunson played an instrumental role in recruiting and shaping the Miners program. He led UTEP to three consecutive winning seasons, including two that consisted of 20-plus victories.

Brunson began his career at Independence Community College in 1987 as an assistant men’s basketball coach. In 1989 he took the reins of the women’s basketball program and at the same time served as the director of athletics from 1991-2001. He also served as the men’s and women’s basketball academic counselor.

The Wichita, Kan., native received the Army Commendation during the 1990 season after being called to active duty for Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield.

During his playing days (1983-85) at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas, Brunson, dished out 478 assists, shattering the school record. He also tallied an impressive 7.5 assists per game. After graduation, Brunson was a student assistant for St. Mary’s from 1985-87. In 2004, he was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame.

Brunson and his wife, Cynthia, have three children, Darius, Deion and Deiona. He also has a son, Darren, Jr. Brunson earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from St. Mary’s in 1987. He later earned his master’s degree in administration from Pittsburg State in 1998.
