Lady Demons Use Outside Shot to Sink Islanders, 68-58

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team fell short, 68-58, to Northwestern State Tuesday night at the American Bank Center. The Islanders (3-22, 2-12 SLC) cut the deficit to 10 with three to play in the second half but couldn't overcome the Lady Demons (10-15, 6-9 SLC) from behind the arc.   

Jessica Jammer paced the Islanders with her seventh double-figure scoring game of the season with 16 points while Marquesha Anderson-Sparks and Brandi Huff each chipped in eight points apiece. The Islanders' glass notched the boards, 35-25, and the bench dominated 27-0 behind the help of Anderson-Sparks, Huff, Janae Blount and Alisa Roberts who all placed in the scoring column.

The Lady Demons were powered by four players in double-figure scoring. Keisha Lee led all scorers with 21 points while Jasmine Upchurch added 19. Jasmine Bradley added 16 points and Janelle Perez tallied 10 for Northwestern State who shot 50 percent from the floor and 82 percent from the charity stripe.

The Islanders jumped out to an 8-3 lead with baskets by Ashanti Plummer and Jessica Jammer before the Lady Demons put together a 13-0 run to push ahead by eight with just over 12 to play. The Islanders answered back with four from the charity stripe before the two teams battled back and forth.

After a Lee jumper, Gregory and Jammer responded with back-to-back buckets to pull the Islanders within two with just under eight to play. The teams traded free throws before the Lady Demons pushed their lead to seven on a 6-2 run. However, Anderson-Sparks gave the Islanders a spark off the bench with a jumper to trim the deficit to five with 4:40 to play. After trading baskets, Northwestern State built a 39-27 advantage on a 7-0 run. Anderson-Sparks' bucket cut the lead to 10 with 1:35 to play before the Lady Demons' Jasmine Upchurch capped the first-half scoring with a jumper.

Northwestern State took a 41-29 lead at the half on 57.7 percent shooting from the field. Jammer led the Islanders with 10 points while the Lady Demons had two in double-figure scoring behind Lee's 16 points. The Islanders shot 81.8 percent from the charity stripe in the first half while Northwestern State shot 80 percent from behind the arc. The Islanders' bench outscored the Lady Demons' bench 10-0.

The Islanders gained momentum out of the half with back-to-back buckets by Jammer to pull within eight but the Lady Demons struck back with a trey. After Jammer added a couple from the line, Northwestern State put together a 7-2 run. The two traded baskets before Blount triggered her first of two from behind the arc and Anderson-Sparks nailed two from the stripe to cut the deficit to 11 with just over eight to play.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi pulled within 10 with three to play, after Blount, Gregory and Roberts all collected three's on a 9-4 spurt. After trading baskets Darley finished the three-point play, but the Lady Demons' Arianne Ausmer finished out the scoring with two from the line.

The Islanders will next be in action when they host Southeastern La. on Thursday, Feb. 28. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. at the American Bank Center.
