Women’s Basketball Falls Short to Lamar, 44-37


BEAUMONT, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Women's Basketball team led Lamar at the half but the Lady Cardinals' second-half play edged the Islanders 44-37 Saturday at the Montagne Center on Elementary Appreciation Night.

The Islanders (1-14, 0-4 SLC) and Lady Cardinals (11-4, 4-1 SLC) were tied with 3:30 to play in the second half but a 7-0 run by Lamar capped the scoring. Ashley Darley powered the Islanders with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. Marquesha Anderson-Sparks, Trish Amboree and Brandi Huff each tallied six points apiece to lead the Islanders' bench. Huff led the Islanders' glass with seven rebounds and Jessica Jammer chipped in six.

Lamar was propelled by three players in double-figure scoring. Alice Robinson and Gia Ayers led all scorers with 12 points and Carenn Baylor added 10. Dominique Edwards tallied a game-high 12 rebounds.

Darley opened the game with the Islanders' first six points. The Corpus Christi native sank both baskets to start the game to give the Islanders a 4-0 lead. After two Lady Cardinals free throws, Darley nailed another layup to push the Islanders ahead by four. The two teams traded buckets before Lamar took their first lead of the game on a 5-0 run. However, Darley nailed a free throw and Huff hit a layup to build a three-point Islander cushion. Lamar knotted the score at 12 before Jammer chipped in a layup. Lamar added a free throw before Marquesha Anderson-Sparks triggered the first three of the game to extend the Islanders' lead to four with just under three to play in the half. Lamar pulled within two with two free throws to end the half.

The Islanders headed into the locker room with a 17-15 lead on 24 percent shooting from the field and tallied 12 of their 17 points in the paint. Darley led all scorers with eight points while Ashanti Plummer and Verne'qua Taylor led the Islanders with four rebounds apiece. Lamar grabbed the 25-24 advantage on the boards, 25-24, behind Edwards' six rebounds. Baylor led the Lady Cardinals with five points.

Lamar gained momentum out of the half on a 13-0 run to build an 11-point lead. The Islanders answered with a 5-0 run with a layup by Huff and a three by Trish Amboree. The Lady Cardinals pushed their lead to 10 with back-to-back baskets before Amboree triggered her second three of the game. After trading baskets from behind the arc, Lamar extended their lead to nine. The Islanders answered by putting together a 9-0 run to knot the score at 37. During the run, Darley added two buckets, while Huff added a layup and Anderson-Sparks chipped in three points. However, the Lady Cardinals capped the scoring with a 7-0 run.

The Islanders will return to the American Bank Center on Thursday, Jan. 17 to host first-year Southland Conference member Oral Roberts. Tipoff is slated for 5:00 p.m. and fans can enjoy a 4 for $44 deal, receive 4 hot dogs, 4 drinks and 4 tickets for just $44.
