Women's Basketball Drops Conference Opener, 65-46, at Sam Houston State
HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Women's basketball team cut an early deficit to one with five minutes to play in the first half but Sam Houston State's Britni Martin tallied 26 points to lead the Bearkats to a 65-46 Southland Conference opener Friday afternoon at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
Jessica Jammer paced the Islanders (1-11, 0-1 SLC) with 12 points, her third straight double-figure scoring game and fourth this season while Alisa Roberts and Ashley Darley each chipped in seven points. Brandi Huff grabbed a team-high six rebounds and Janae Blount added six points and three assists. The Islanders' bench outscored the Bearkats' bench 18-10 and scored half of their points in the paint.
Martin led the Bearkats (5-8, 1-0 SLC) with 26 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, including four from behind the arc and recorded a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe. Sequeena Thomas added nine points and led the glass with 10 rebounds. The Bearkats' notched the 45-29 rebound battle.
The Bearkats jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Jammer got on board with a jumper. Sam Houston State extended the lead to 11-2 before Blount nailed a jumper and after two from the Bearkats' charity stripe, Roberts hit back-to-back buckets to pull the Islanders within five. After trading buckets, the Islanders put together a 12-4 run to trim the lead to one with 8:20 to play. The Bearkats however kept clawing off the Islanders and maintained the lead by one. After a Jammer jumper with 5:16 to play, Sam Houston State built a 12-point cushion on a 13-2 run to end the half. During the run, Martin tallied 10 of the Bearkats' points.
Sam Houston State headed into halftime with a 35-23 lead on 44 percent shooting from the field. The Islanders were led by Jammer's eight points while Roberts and Blount each added four. Martin led the Bearkats' with 17 points, including 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Thomas led the boards with nine and chipped in seven points.
In the second half, the Bearkats went on a 17-4 run with 10:20 to play to extend the lead to 58-33. Huff and Roberts followed with points from the charity stripe to cut it to 21. The Islanders finished on a 9-7 run to end the game as the Bearkats secured the conference opener.
The Islanders will continue Southland play on Monday, Jan. 7, when they host Stephen F. Austin at the American Bank Center. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.
