No. 13/18 Texas Too Strong For Islanders, 79-30

AUSTIN – The No. 13/18 nationally-ranked Texas Longhorns were too big and athletic for the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team as they posted a 79-30 victory Friday afternoon at the Frank Erwin Center in front of 6,340 elementary children on forty acres field trip day.

The Longhorns (5-0) shot 45 percent from the field and were powered by four players in double-figure scoring. Texas held the Islanders (0-8) well below their average on a cold-shooting night.

Freshman Janae Blount tallied her sixth double-figure scoring game of the season to lead the Islanders with 14 points and she tied a career-high four three pointers. She also tallied a team and career-high seven rebounds and four steals in 40 minutes of play.

The Longhorns opened with a quick post layup before Ashley Darley sank 1-of-2 from the charity stripe. Texas extended the lead to 13 early in the half.

Alisa Roberts netted the Islanders' first field goal of the game coming off the bench for an injured Darley, who played only four minutes. Darley is the team's second leading scorer.

Texas extended their lead as the first half progressed with the overpowering inside presence of Big 12 Players of the Week Nneka Enemkpali and Imani McGee-Stafford. The size difference equated to a 26-14 rebound advantage for Texas at the half and a 58-35 advantage for the game. Texas has averaged a 20-plus rebound margin against all five of their November opponents.

The Longhorns came out in the second half extending the lead with an overpowering 46 points in the paint for the game. The undersized Islanders fought the entire night to trim the Longhorn deficit.

The Islanders will be off the next 14 days before facing former Southland Conference opponent Texas State on Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Dugan Wellness Center. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
