Women’s Basketball Falls to Colorado, 75-48, to Open the Omni Hotels Classic
BOULDER, Colo. – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team dropped the opening game of the 26th Annual Omni Hotels Classic Friday night to Colorado, 75-48, at the Coors Events Center. Janae Blount and Ashley Darley paced the Islanders in double figures.
Blount tallied 13 points to pace the Islanders (0-5) with her fourth double-figure scoring game of the season. The freshman also tied a season-high three-three pointers and led the glass with six rebounds. Darley chipped in 12 points, including two from behind the arc. The Islanders tallied a season-high seven three-pointers.
Three players led the Buffaloes (3-0) in double figures. Arielle Roberson paced all scorers with 16 points while Jasmine Sborov chipped in 10 and Chucky Jeffery added 14. Jeffery also grabbed a game-high nine boards and Roberson tallied eight. Colorado outrebounded the Islanders 49-23 and led the paint 36-10.
Jessica Jammer opened the game with a free throw before Colorado went on a 5-0 run to take an early 5-1 lead. Darley answered with a trey before Sborov hit a layup. Blount triggered the Islanders' second three pointer to knot the score at 7-7 with 14:33 to play. The Buffaloes followed with back-to-back buckets to take a four-point lead. After a couple Colorado free throws, Marquesha Anderson-Sparks hit the Islanders' third three of the half to trim the lead to three with 12:10 to play.
The Buffaloes answered with back-to-back treys to extend the lead to nine before the two teams traded baskets. Blount triggered the Islanders' fourth three of the half to cut the lead to six with 6:49 to play. After a Colorado basket, Blount fired another jumper just inside the arc before the Buffaloes hit back-to-back free throws. Darley answered with a jumper to pull the Islanders' within six with 4:20 to play. Coloardo put together a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 12. Taryn Gregory hit the Islanders' fifth three of the half before the Buffaloes tallied four free throws to push the lead to 13. With 19 seconds left to play, Blount dished it to Morgan Schwartz for a jumper to cut the score to 11 to end the half.
Colorado went into the locker room with a 35-24 lead behind 40 percent shooting from the field. Blount paced the Islanders with eight points and Darley added seven. The Buffaloes were led by Sborov's 10 points and Jeffery's six points. Colorado outrebounded the Islanders' 23-15 and outscored the Islanders' 12-2 in the paint. The Islanders tallied a season-high five three's in the first half.
The Buffaloes opened the second half with a layup before the Islanders went on a 6-0 run to trim the lead to six with 18:20 to play. Jeffery and Roberson hit layups for Colorado before Brandi Huff got on board with a jumper. Colorado answered with another trey and a jumper to extend the lead to 14 on a 5-0 run.
Darley fired the Islanders' sixth three before the Buffaloes responded with a 4-0 run. Ashanti Plummer hit a layup before the two teams traded points at the charity stripe. After back-to-back layups, Trish Amboree knocked in three points from the line to pull the Islanders within 10 with 9:28 to play. The Buffaloes responded with a 7-0 run to take a 17-point lead before Blount triggered her second three of the game. After Colorado tallied three points, Verne'qua Taylor hit her first jumper of the night, but the Buffaloes burst into a 12-0 run to end the game.
The Islanders will face Auburn (3-2) tomorrow at 5 p.m. MST (6 p.m. CST) in the consolation game of the classic. The Tigers lost 78-57 to San Diego State earlier this evening. Live stats will be available here.
