Women’s Basketball Drops 52-40 Decision to UTSA
SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team dropped a 52-40 decision to former Southland opponent UTSA Friday night at the Convocation Center. The Islanders trimmed the lead to seven with 12 minutes to play but was unable to stop the bench play of the Roadrunners.
Freshman Janae Blount led the Islanders (0-3) in double figures for the third straight game. She added 10 points including 4-of-6 from the charity stripe. Alisa Roberts added nine points and Jessica Jammer chipped in eight points, four rebounds and two steals. The Islanders went 16-of-25 from the line compared to the Roadrunners 5-of-11 shooting. UTSA edged the Islanders 34-33 on the glass.
The Roadrunners (3-0) were paced by Simone Young's 13 points and Lyndi Thorman's eight points. UTSA shot 40.4 percent to the Islanders' 27.3 percent and received 29 points from their bench.
Jessica Jammer opened the game with a bucket and the Islanders led for the first three minutes before the Roadrunners got on board with a trey. Blount hit a jumper before the Roadrunners went on an 11-2 run to take a 14-6 lead with 10:40 left in the first half. Jammer stopped the run with a layup on the left side and Plummer hit one of two free throws to pull the Islanders within five with 8:37 to play in the first half.
UTSA extended the lead to 17 on a 12-0 run with 5:15 to play before the Islanders answered with a 10-0 run to cap the first half. During the run Marquesha Anderson-Sparks added two free throws and Blount and Jammer each chipped in jumpers. Verne'qua Taylor followed with a free throw before Jammer tallied her eighth point on a fast-break layup and Blount ended the half with one of two free throws to pull within seven.
The Roadrunners took a 26-19 lead into the locker room on 44 percent shooting from the field. Jammer paced the Islanders with eight points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field and Blount added five. UTSA hit 4-of-7 three pointers in the first half and scored 15 of their 26 points in the paint.
UTSA opened the second half on a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 13 with 13:34 left. Ashanti Plummer stopped the run with a jumper from the left wing and jumpstarted a 6-0 run to trim the lead to seven with 12 minutes to play. UTSA responded by putting together an 11-2 run to push the lead to 43-27 with 6:53 to play. Blount followed with a free throw but the Roadrunners hit a layup inside to extend the lead back to 17.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi scored six points at the charity stripe over the next three minutes but UTSA pushed the lead to 17 after a trey by Young with 2:35 to play. Roberts hit back-to-back jumpers and added a free throw to end the game.
The Islanders will return home to take on Big Ten opponent Indiana on Monday, Nov. 19, at the American Bank Center. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
