CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team put together a huge second half to cruise past Texas Lutheran University, 83-43, Sunday afternoon in an exhibition at the American Bank Center. The Islanders outscored the Bulldogs 43-18 in the second half and 14 players scored under first first-year head coach Royce Chadwick.
The Islanders (1-0) were powered by three players in double-figure scoring. Senior Alisa Roberts led all scorers with 13 points and seniors Ashley Darley and Jessica Jammer chipped in 12 apiece. Junior Brandi Huff led the glass with a game-high eight boards and Jammer pulled down seven. Darley also added six steals and two assists in 17 minutes. Senior Verne'qua Taylor dished out a game-high five assists.
The Islanders received 51 points from the bench and shot 46 percent (29-of-63) from the field to the Bulldogs 30 percent (16-of-53) . Texas A&M - Corpus Christi outrebounded the Bulldogs 46-35 and scored 37 points off of TLU's 29 turnovers.
The Bulldogs (0-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the game before the Islanders went on a 8-1 run to take an 8-5 lead. TLU tied it at 8-8 before the Islanders took the lead for good with a mini 5-0 run. The Islanders extended the lead to 16-9 after a Jammer and-one at the 12:34 mark.
Taryn Gregory pushed the Islanders to an eight-point lead after her first three of the game. After a 7-0 run, the Islanders put together an 11-2 run to take a 10-point lead. After a layup by the Bulldogs, the Islanders put together a 6-0 run to lead 36-24. The two teams traded free throws before Roberts closed the half with a three-pointer from the right wing.
The Islanders went into the locker room with a 40-25 lead behind Darley's eight points, which included going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. She also chipped in five steals and two assists. Roberts and Jammer each added seven points and Gregory was 2-for-2 from three-point land to add in six. Morgan Schwartz and Brandi Huff powered the glass with five rebounds apiece. The Islanders shot 46.7 percent from the field in the first half and scored 16 points off of the Bulldogs' 15 turnovers. TLU was paced by Katy Scott's eight points and five rebounds.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi kept the momentum going in the second half to outscore the Bulldogs 43-18. Schwartz and Roberts chipped in back-to-back buckets to extend the lead to 44-25. TLU's Italy Taylor added two free throws before the Islanders pushed ahead 50-27 on a 6-0 run which included back-to-back layups by Roberts and a jumper by Darley.
The Bulldogs answered with four points from Scott to pull within 19, but Marquesha Anderson-Sparks and Janae Blount stopped the run with a layup and a three-pointer to push the Islanders back up to 24. A Jammer jumper and free throws by Anderson-Sparks, Huff and Jammer gave the Islanders a 63-31 lead. The Bulldogs stopped the 13-0 run with their second three of the game from Bianca Casas. Both teams traded baskets before TLU put together a 7-0 run to pull within 24. However, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi responded with a 10-0 run of their own. Anderson-Sparks triggered her first three-pointer of the game and Blount and Huff added free throws.
Damequia Montgomery and Ashanti Plummer both followed with their first two points of the game to give the Islanders their biggest lead of the game, 75-41. After a layup by the Bulldogs' Megan Roemlein, Trish Amboree got on board with a jumper and two free throws to push the lead to 79-43. The Islanders extended the run to 18-2 and ended the game with back-to-back layups by Imani Dunn and Sarah Alva to give the Islanders a 40-point victory.
Plummer, Schwartz, Darley, Roberts and Taylor got the starting nod for the Islanders.
