Women’s Basketball Releases 2012-13 Schedule
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team will tip off the 2012-13 season with a tough non-conference slate, including five opponents from BCS conferences. The Islanders will start the season against the likes of Belmont and Indiana before traveling to Boulder, Colo., for a two-day tournament at the University of Colorado.
"Our schedule is loaded with games against some of the toughest teams in the country," head coach Royce Chadwick said. "We have BCS league teams scheduled throughout the non-conference. The challenge will be there for our team to rise to the occasion, both on the road and at home. Southland doubleheaders with the men will be exciting with great action beginning with our tipoff."
The Islanders open the season with two games at the American Bank Center, including an exhibition against Texas Lutheran on Nov. 4. Following that the team will face Belmont (Nov. 11) in Corpus Christi before opening play on the road on Nov. 13 in Edinburg, Texas, against UTPA and at former Southland foe UTSA on Nov. 16.
Next up on the slate is a home contest vs. Indiana on Nov. 19 followed by a road trip to Boulder, Colo., for the two-day 26th Annual Omni Hotels Classic. The Islanders are scheduled to play the Buffaloes on Friday, Nov. 23, and either Auburn or San Diego State on Saturday, Nov. 24.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will return home to host UTPA for the second game against the Broncs on Nov. 28, followed by a trip up the road at Texas on Nov. 30. The Longhorns advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago, and this season's game will mark four years since the two teams faced each other in Austin in 2008.
Three games are scheduled for December with the Islanders welcoming former Southland rival Texas State to the Dugan Wellness Center on Dec. 15 and Cornell to the American Bank Center on Dec. 18. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will wrap 2012 with a final non-conference game in Ft. Worth against TCU (Dec. 29) before the start of the Southland Conference schedule.
The Islanders will open league play and the New Year on the road in Huntsville against Sam Houston State on Jan. 5. On Monday, Jan. 7, the Islanders will host Stephen F. Austin at the ABC before returning to the road for their first Thursday-Saturday road trip. First up is a contest at Lake Charles, La., on Jan. 10, to take on two-time defending Southland Conference Tournament Champion McNeese State, followed by Lamar on Jan. 12.
Oral Roberts comes to the Coastal Bend for its first time in 14 years on Jan .17. It will mark just the third time the Islanders and Golden Eagles have faced each other. The two teams played 13 years ago in Tulsa, Okla. and the Golden Eagles traveled to Corpus Christi on Dec. 11, 1999, during the Islanders' inaugural year of the program. The Islanders will then host defending Southland Conference regular-season champions Central Arkansas on Jan. 19.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will hit the road for a pair of games in Louisiana near the end of January. The Islanders will take on Nicholls State (Jan. 24) before facing Southeastern La. (Jan. 26).
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will start the second round of Southland play with three home games, starting Feb. 1 when Sam Houston State makes a return trip to the Dugan. Lamar comes to town on Feb. 7 before the Islanders host McNeese State on Homecoming at the ABC on Feb. 9.
Southland play will continue for the Islanders when they travel to Central Arkansas and Oral Roberts on Feb. 14 and Feb 16, respectively. The Islanders will then host a three-game homestand starting with Northwestern State (Feb. 19), followed by Southeastern La. (Feb. 28) and Nicholls State (March 2). The Islanders topped all three at home last season.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will close the regular season on the road against Northwestern State (March 7) and Stephen F. Austin (March 9). Following the conclusion of the regular season, the Southland Conference Tournament will take place in Katy, Texas, from March 12-16 at the Leonard E. Merrell Center.
The Islanders return 10 letterwinners from last season and welcome five newcomers under Chadwick.
"We need all our fans to rally for our home games to give us every edge possible," Chadwick added.
