CORPUS CHRISTI – Senior Myeisha Myles posted a game-high 17 points and the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team cruised to a 74-54 victory Wednesday over UT Arlington in their final home game of the season at the American Bank Center.
The Islanders (9-19, 5-10) were powered by three players in double-figure scoring. Myles went 6-8 from the field and tallied two blocks and five rebounds and junior Alisa Roberts added 15 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Brandi Huff also scored in double figures, tallying 11 points. Senior Zoe Vega-Vega tallied a career-high five assists and grabbed seven rebounds. The Islanders shot 45.3 percent (20-64) from the field to the Mavericks 28.8 percent (17-59). Texas A&M - Corpus Christi edged UT Arlington on the boards 45-43. The Islanders also received 29 points from the bench.
Briana Walker paced the Mavericks (6-21, 4-11) with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Sabreena DeNure tallied nine points and six rebounds.
UT Arlington jumped on the board first with a three-pointer from DeNure, but the Islanders quickly took the lead with a 6-0 run with buckets by Imani Dunn and Myles with Vega-Vega chipping in two assists. After a bucket by Walker the two teams traded free throws before the Islanders extended the lead to six with a jumper by Vega-Vega and a trey from the top of the arc from Roberts. The Islanders then took their biggest lead of the game on a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 19-9. Huff added a layup and three-pointer and junior Verne'qua Taylor added a free throw.
The Mavericks cut the lead to six before Trish Amboree triggered the Islanders third three-pointer of the game. Malaika Green answered with a three of her own and a free throw before back-to-back buckets by Myles and Roberts gave the Islanders a nine-point lead.
DeNure chipped in a three and Walker added a free throw to bring the Mavericks within five with 4:37 left to play. The two teams traded free throws before Myles layup inside from a dish from Vega-Vega gave the Islanders a 30-22 lead. UT Arlington pulled within four to end the half on a 4-0 run.
The Islanders took a 30-26 lead into the locker room on 36.7 percent shooting from the field. Myles led all scorers with 10 points and Roberts added seven. The Islanders grabbed the 23-22 advantage on the glass. DeNure and Desherra Nwanguma paced the Islanders with six points apiece.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi gained momentum out of the half on a 12-3 run to take a 12-point lead. Myles and Taylor hit back-to-back layups before the Mavericks scored three points. Walker added a free throw before Jessica Jammer got on board with a layup from Roberts to give the Islanders a 10-point advantage. Walker added another free throw from Jammer hit consecutive jumpers and Myles added a layup to give the Islanders an 18-point lead with 12:40 left.
Takiyah Langford added a free throw for UT Arlington before the two teams traded baskets. The Islanders shooting became red hot with the Islanders building a 29-point cushion on a 14-1 run with 7:20 remaining. During the run, five different Islanders tacked on points. Roberts, Huff and Amboree all added buckets and Marquesha Anderson-Sparks triggered a three while Taylor chipped in points from the charity stripe.
The Islanders continued to score and padded the lead to 25 after an Anderson-Sparks jumper with three minutes remaining. Jammer's jumper with one minute remaining gave the Islanders a 25-point lead and the two teams traded buckets before Michelle Rodriguez made two free throws to end the game.
The Islanders will travel to Conway, Ark. to take on Central Arkansas in their final regular season game Saturday, March 3. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
