CORPUS CHRISTI – Myeisha Myles' winning shot with 2.4 seconds left lifted the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball (8-14, 4-5) team past Northwestern State, 88-86, Saturday night at the American Bank Center. The Islanders were powered by four players in double-figure scoring in a game that featured 13 ties and 19 lead changes.
The Islanders scored a season-high 88 points, including 32 points in the paint and shot 42.7 percent (32-75) from the field. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi turned the Lady Demons' 22 turnovers into 26 points and scored 27 points on second chance points. The Islanders also edged the Lady Demons on the boards 43-41.
Myles paced the Islanders with a career-high 27 points and 14 rebounds and junior Verne'qua Taylor also scored a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 10 assists, while tallying seven rebounds, three shy of a triple double, while adding five steals. She now holds the Islanders all-time assist record as a junior with 110 assists this season. Junior Alisa Roberts also had a career-night with a career-high 21 points including 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Sophomore Brandi Huff also chipped in double-figure scoring efforts with 10 points and seven rebounds,
Northwestern State (5-17, 1-8) was propelled by five players in double-figure scoring. Trudy Armstead led the Lady Demons with 22 points, Tiandra Willaims added a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Jasmine Upchurch scored 16 points and 10 rebounds. Ronikka Drake scored 13 points and Jordi James tallied 12 points to round out the Lady Demons scoring.
The Lady Demons grabbed the opening tip and scored on an inside layup but the Islanders answered with a 7-0 run to take the early 7-2 lead. During the run Roberts triggered her first three and Myles and Taylor each added buckets. Northwestern State answered with an 8-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. Taylor stopped the run with a three-pointer from the top of the arc and Huff got on the board with a layup to push the Islanders to a 12-10 lead.
After a Lady Demon bucket, Marquesha Anderson-Sparks hit a free throw and Roberts jumper pulled the Islanders ahead by three. After trading back-to-back baskets, the Lady Demons cut the lead to one before Huff's free throw padded the Islanders lead to two. Another layup by Northwestern State tied the game at 18 with 11:15 to play in the half. The Islanders padded the lead to three, 21-18, before Armstead's bucket cut it to one. Back-to-back layups by Myles and Jammer gave the Islanders a five-point cushion with 8:33 to play.
The two teams traded buckets before Northwestern State gained momentum on an 11-2 run to take a 33-29 lead. Roberts and Zoe Vega-Vega stopped the run adding buckets to even it at 33. The Lady Demons secured the lead on a jumper by Williams. Taylor's dish to Roberts for a three pushed the Islanders ahead by one. Northwestern State responded with an 8-2 run to take a 42-38 lead into the locker room.
Northwestern State took the halftime lead on 52.8 (19-36) percent shooting from the field. Myles led the Islanders with 11 points and five boards. Roberts also scored in double-digit scoring with 10. Taylor also chipped in five points, five rebound and four assists. The Islanders and Lady Demons were even on the boards 22-22.
In the second half, the Lady Demons and Islanders battled back-and-forth with 10 ties and 13 lead changes. The two teams traded buckets until the Islanders went on a 6-0 run to take a two-point lead 49-47. James triggered a three to push the Lady Demons ahead by one. Roberts answered with a trey of her own to give the Islanders a 51-50 lead. After the Islanders and Lady Demons traded baskets, Northwestern State went on a 4-0 run to go ahead by two with 12:27 remaining. The Islanders pushed ahead by four with free throws by Roberts and Taylor while Huff's put back gave the Islanders a 59-56 lead. After Drake's three-pointer, Anderson-Sparks answered with a three to give the Islanders a 62-59 lead.
Northwestern State went ahead by two before Myles tied it at 64-64. A mini 3-0 run by the Lady Demons pushed the lead to three. After a bucket by Myles, Williams triggered a three to give Northwestern State a four-point cushion. Taylor's layup and-one pulled the Islanders within one with 8:15 to play. The Islanders answered with a 4-0 run to pull ahead by one, 73-72 with 7:28. The teams traded baskets back and forth until Taylor's three-pointer gave the Islanders a two-point advantage. A layup by Williams and two free throws by Drake put the Lady Demons ahead by two. Vega-Vega answered with a three-pointer and Roberts two free throws gave the Islanders a three-point cushion. After trading baskets, the Islanders and Lady Demons capitalized at the free throw line back-and-forth to tie it at 86-86 with 16.7 seconds left. Myles winning shot off a Vega-Vega missed jumper with 2.4 seconds left clinched the Islanders two-point victory.
The Islanders will hit the road to take on Sam Houston State, Saturday, Feb. 11, for a second round matchup at 2 p.m.
