EDINBURG, Texas – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team (3-7) dropped their second road game of the season, 69-52, to Texas-Pan American (3-7) Wednesday at UTPA Fieldhouse. Senior Myeisha Myles tallied her fifth double-digit scoring game with 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. The Islanders took the opening lead but Keandra Goodson's layup in the paint at the 5:58 mark in the first half put the Broncs up for good 24-22.
Adding to the scoring for the Islanders was freshman Trish Amboree, who chipped in eight points off the bench and sophomore Zoe Vega-Vega added eight. Junior Jessica Jammer tied Myles on the glass with seven boards. The Islanders' bench outscored the Broncs 26-19. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi shot 33.3 percent from the field (16-48) to the Broncs 40.3 percent (27-67) and outscored UTPA from behind the arc.
The Broncs were led by three players in double-digits en route to earning their third win of the season. Donna Jackson led the Broncs with 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds. LaQuita Garner tallied 14 points and three steals and Bianca Torre added 13 points, five boards and three steals. The Broncs edged the Islanders on the glass 40-34 and scored 28 points off the Islanders 22 turnovers.
Junior Alisa Roberts hit a three-pointer to open the game and scored seven of the Islanders first nine points and added two steals during the run. Jammer added a jumper before the Broncs went on 10-0 run at the 12:10 mark on a jumper and free throw from Adanna Opara. Garner hit a three-pointer to take the Broncs first lead of the game, 10-9. Franchesca Simon hit a jumper and Torre followed with a jumper from Simon to cap the run at 14-9.
The two teams traded buckets back-and-forth until the Broncs took a 26-23 leaad with 4:29 left in the half. The Broncs went on a 6-0 run before sophomore Marquesha Anderson-Sparks scored her first two points of the game at the free throw line. The Broncs took another 6-0 run to take a 36-25 lead. Sophomore Brandi Huff and Amboree both hit two free throws to bring the score to 38-29. Toree added two free throws to close the half to give the Broncs a 40-29 going into the break.
At the half, the Islanders trailed 40-29 on 36.4 percent shooting from the field. Roberts led the team with seven points on 3-of-4 shooting and added two steals. Myles chipped in six points, including 4-of-6 shooting from the free throw line. Garner and Torre led UTPA in double-digits at the half. Torre scored 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting and Garner tallied 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. The Islanders committed 10 turnovers to the Broncs six and led the glass 19-14.
The Islanders cut the deficit to 10 at the 7:49 mark in the second half off a Myles putback. Junior Imani Dunn started the run with 11:30 with her first jumper of the season. Myles hit two free throws and a jumper to bring the Islanders within 12. After a Garner jumper, Vega-Vega answered with a jumper from junior Verne'qua Taylor. Myles made her seventh free throw of the game and followed with the putback to cut the score to 57-47.
The Islanders will take a nine day break from action before returning home to play host to Jackson State at the Dugan Wellness Center on Friday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m.
