Women's Basketball Falls to North Texas, 72-58, in Final Game of Rice Tournament

HOUSTON – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team (3-6) fell to North Texas (6-2), 72-58, in the championship game of the Gene Hackerman Rice Invitational Saturday night at Tudor Fieldhouse. Freshman Trish Amboree and sophomore Marquesha Anderson-Sparks led the Islanders in double digits.

Amboree led all scorers with a season-high 16 points, including 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Anderson-Sparks hit a season-high four three-pointers to register a season-high 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting.

The Islanders shot 32.7 percent from the field (18-55), 45.0 percent from behind the arc (9-20) and 56.5 percent from the charity stripe (13-23). The Islanders' bench outscored the Mean Green 40-26.

The Mean Green were led by three players in double digits. Jasmine Godbolt scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Sara Stanley added 12 points and led the glass with 11 rebounds. Tamara Torre scored 13 points including 3-for-5 shooting from three-point range.

The Islanders offense came alive from three-point land to start the second half after trailing by 14 at the half, but the Islanders couldn't overcome the Mean Green on the glass and at the line. North Texas shot 62.9 percent from the line (22-35) and outrebounded the Islanders 54-41 and scored 28 points in the paint to the Islanders' 10. The Mean Green capitalized on 23 second chance points.  

The Islanders cut the deficit to six with 13:45 to play in the second half off an Anderson-Sparks three-pointer. Amboree scored four points during the run and Huff hit her first three-pointer of the season to get the Islanders within nine.  

The Mean Green opened the game with a 9-0 run on 3-of-7 shooting from the field. Junior Alisa Roberts jumper just inside the arc stopped the run and senior Myeisha Myles made layup brought the Islanders within five. The Mean Green answered with a 6-0 run until Anderson-Sparks knocked in one of her two three-pointers of the half.

North Texas extended the lead to 18 with 9:30 to play. The Islanders responded with a 7-0 run that was jumpstarted by Anderson-Sparks' five points and Roberts' jumper to cut the lead to 25-14.

Both team traded buckets back-and-forth until the Islanders cut the lead to 29-19.  Amboree hit a three-pointer with 2:25 to play and Jammer made two free throws. Amboree notched her second three-pointer with 36 seconds of the half.   

The Mean Green took a 41-27 lead at the half on 36.8 percent shooting from the field. Anderson-Sparks led the Islanders with eight points on 3-of-9 shooting from the field, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc. Junior Verne'qua Taylor added two assists and two steals. Godbolt led all scorers with nine points and six rebounds and Stanley added eight points. North Texas outrebounded the Islanders 29-19 at the half.

Junior Jessica Jammer was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Islanders will play next on Wednesday, Dec. 7, in Edinburg, Texas, vs. Texas-Pan American. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
