Women’s Basketball Cruises Past Houston Baptist, 65-45

HOUSTON – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team (2-4) sealed their first road game of the season, Saturday, cruising to a 65-45 victory over Houston Baptist (0-6) in the final day of the Husky Classic, Saturday evening, in Sharp Gym. The Islanders were powered by three Islanders in double digits and 30 points from the bench.

After falling to Texas Southern yesterday 63-54 in the first game of the Classic, the Islanders bounced back to have their best performance of the year, in a game which saw all of the Islanders tally minutes.

Sophomore Marquesha Anderson-Sparks paced the Islanders with a career-high 14 points on 4-of-10 shooting including 3-of-8 from behind the arc and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. Senior Myeisha Myles posted her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 boards on 4-of-6 shooting. Junior Jessica Jammer tallied her fifth consecutive double-digit game with 12 points, two assists, one block and one steal.  

The Islanders shot 38.2 percent from the field (26-68), 27.3 percent from behind the arc (6-22) and 46.7 percent from the charity stripe (7-15). The Islanders scored 23 points off of the Huskies 22 turnovers and 32 points in the paint.

Shanice Steenholdt led all scorers with 20 points and 15 rebounds in 34 minutes of play and Devyn Weymouth chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds in 40 minutes of play for the Huskies.

HBU took the lead on the opening tip with Joselyn Pugh's jumper at the 19:19 mark, before the Islanders took the lead for good on a 13-0 run capped by four different Islanders. Jammer, Myles, Huff and Gregory all added buckets while Myles and Huff chipped in points from the charity line.

The Islanders went on another run with 5:39 to play with a Jammer jumper to take the 28-15 lead. Jammer's pass inside to freshman Trish Amboree extended the Islanders' lead to 15 with 5:14 to go in the half. Myles' rebound and put-back in the paint off an Amboree miss gave the Islanders a 32-15 lead. A steal by Ambree and layup in the paint capped the Islanders' 8-0 run.    

The Islanders went into the half leading 44-22, marking their biggest lead of the season. Anderson-Sparks led all scorers with 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting from behind the arc. Myles added six points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Jammer chipped in eight points and two assists on 4-of-5 shooting. Alisa Roberts added six points on 2-of-4 shooting from three-point land to go along with four rebounds. The Islanders shot 44.7 percent from the field (17-38) with 24 points coming from the bench and 18 in the paint.   

In the second half, the Islanders extended their biggest lead of the game to 30 with 6:29 to play. Anderson-Sparks' jumper in the paint jumpstarted the run at the 11:31 mark and Roberts' pass down low to Myles in the paint gave the Islanders a 57-32 lead. Amboree's three and Jammer's jumper capped a 10-0 run to give the Islanders their biggest lead, 62-32.
