HOUSTON – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team (1-4) dropped their fourth game of the season, Friday, to Texas Southern, 63-54, in the first of two games in the Houston Baptist Tournament at Sharp Gym. Despite leading at the half by one and a 6-0 run with 9:42 left, the Tigers (1-2) answered with a 14-0 run in the second half to secure the victory.
Junior Jessica Jammer posted her second consecutive double-double with 12 points and tied a game-high 11 rebounds while tallying her fourth straight double-digit scoring game. Sophomore Brandi Huff posted a career-high 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting and freshman Trish Amboree added nine points and seven rebounds. Junior Alisa Roberts had a game-high four steals.
The Islanders shot 30.6 percent from the field (22-72), 17.6 percent from behind the arc (3-17) and 50.0 percent from the charity stripe (7-14).
Gianne Fleming and Kiara Taylor led the Tigers with 17 points and 11 points, respectively. Morgan Simmons tied Jammer with 11 rebounds. Texas Southern shot 35.9 percent from the field (23-64), 27.3 percent from behind the arc (6-22) and 50.0 percent from the charity stripe (11-22). The Tigers had 22 turnovers to the Islanders 20.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi took their biggest lead of the game in the second half at the 8:28 mark, up 52-45. Jammer and Huff scored two layups in the paint and junior Verne'qua Taylor added two free throws to cap the scoring.
The Islanders followed by taking a 54-49 lead off Amboree's jumper with 4:57 left, but the Tigers shut down the Islanders' offense and went on a 14-0 run with 4:33 to play.
In the first half, the Islanders took their first lead of the game with nine seconds left on an Amboree jumper to go ahead 28-27. At the half, Huff led the Islanders with eight points on 4-of-4 shooting and Jammer chipped in six points and pulled down six rebounds. The Islanders led the glass 31-21, but committed 14 turnovers to the Tigers 12.
Fleming led the Tigers with eight points at the half and Janae Lyde added six points. Simmons led Texas Southern on the glass with five rebounds.
The Islanders will continue play in the Houston Baptist Tournament tomorrow when they take on Houston Baptist. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. at Sharp Gym in Houston.
